Haydn Miles 1913-2004

The Institute has learned with regret of the death of one of its most active and highly regarded members, Dr Haydn Miles, who served almost continuously on Council from 1970 to 1995, including three periods as Vice President.

Dr Miles was born near Bridgend and was a graduate of University College Cardiff where he obtained a First in Zoology. Before and during the war (he was rejected for military service in 1939 because of a rugby injury) he taught in various grammar schools. At the end of the war he was seconded to one of the emergency teacher training colleges set up to cater for the expected “baby boom” and in 1950 he joined the staff of the Education Department at the University of Hull where he spent the rest of his professional life until his retirement in 1978.

Haydn Miles conducted a number of major research projects in Hull and East Yorkshire on correlates of educational attainment. He was joint organiser of two Institute annual conferences in 1975 (with Peter Cox) and 1981 (with Elizabeth Still).
