Socio-economic Development and Environmental Protection

The Inter-American Parliamentary Group on population and development held a meeting in Caracas, Venezuela, on 25-27 June 1991. There were participants from Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and the USA, as well as representatives from several international and regional organisations. The outcome was a series of recommendations on areas for priority attention in order to reduce the destruction of the environment by socio-economic development. The recommendations included: educating the public at large, to increase their level of awareness of the importance of the effects of any development on the environment, and their subsequent possible effects on the population; searching for solutions on a world wide basis to problems that are themselves world wide; to encourage the respective countries of the delegates to take the necessary actions.
