Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911) - Jubilee Memoir of the Eugenics Society

Preface

1982 brought the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Eugenics Society. To celebrate this Jubilee, Mrs. Dorothy Middleton, great-niece of Sir Francis Galton, was invited to address the Society at a reception held during the annual symposium. She chose as her topic ‘Some memories of Francis Galton’, interweaving into details known from his formal biographies many others still hidden away in private family papers. She has since revised and expanded her text, which the Eugenics Society now has great pleasure in publishing as a Jubilee Memoir. Dorothy Middleton’s power of descriptive writing, and her understanding of and sympathy with the personality of Sir Francis. have combined to make this an enthralling vignette of the life of a true scientist. The Society was delighted with this Jubilee gift.
