"Widespread social concern about education and its social effects has been prominent in public debate in this country for more than a decade.  This book records a symposium of the Eugenics Society on the major areas of present discussion and controversy in education at all levels, from primary school to university and institutions of professional education.  A major theme of the papers is the comparison of contemporary educational theory and practice with what is known about genetic, psychological and social differences between individuals.  In particular, the belief that education can compensate the disadvantaged and underprivileged and diminish social inequality is examined.

This symposium will be followed by others on the general topic of equality and inequality. The next volume is on Equalities and Inequalities in Health.
