Proceedings of the 1976 Eugenics Society conference edited by Robert Chester and John Peel
"No previous period has seen so many changes in the pattern of family life as the last two decades. These changes have been the result of new pressures, political, social, economic, technological and ideological. In recent years experiments with alternatives to the family have had mixed success, and the problem deserves much further attention.
This volume contains the text of papers presented at the thirteenth annual Symposium of the Eugenics Society, which chose to consider the many facets of family life. It is the third volume of a trilogy devoted to equalities and inequalities in contemporary society, the first volume having concerned itself with education, and the second with health. Like all previous Symposia volumes its approach is interdisciplinary: distinguished contributors from the medical, biological and social sciences present up-to-date accounts of the directions of current research in their own individual specialities, and summaries of existing knowledge in the various important areas covered.
The papers are grouped around four major aspects of the family: family formation, the transition to parenthood, family dynamics and family forms. Extensive bibliographies also provide a valuable reference on the general topic of the family.
This volume will prove to be an indispensable source for social and medical workers, social scientists and all who are interested in contemporary social issues." (From the dust jacket of the book)
