Proceedings of the 1981 Eugenics Society conference edited by D.A. Coleman.
"Demographic study of recent immigrants to Britain, and their descendants, has been slow to develop the data have often been inadequate, and the political controversy over immigrant numbers is a deterrent to serious consideration of the facts.
This book, the Proceedings of the Eighteenth Eugenics Society Symposium, addresses the issue in a thought-provoking, up-to-date and detailed series of papers. It presents a historical and geographic survey of patterns of immigration and immigrant settlement, showing the contrast between new and old ethnic and religious minorities. The text then goes on to analyse the demographic components of immigration in papers on mortality, fertility and migration. The implications of future growth in the New Commonwealth population are examined in a population projection, while other papers take a closer look at particular immigrant groups, including the prospects for their assimilation. Special attention is paid throughout to the distinct demographic and cultural aspects of each group. Finally, the older established minorities Catholics in Britain and Northern Ireland, and British Jewry are given detailed coverage.
This unusual and topical treatment of the subject should interest not only demographers in universities or in government, but also sociologists, geographers, politicians, local authority officers, workers in family planning, race relations and teachers in these fields." (From the cover of the book)
